Taxi Driver Assessment FAQs

Yes you can use a manual or automatic vehicle, regardless of which vehicle you intend to use once you have successfully become a taxi driver (unless the council you apply with stipulates any other terms).

For most councils, yes you can take your assessment in any of our locations around the country. However, there are some councils who require you to take your assessment in a specified location:

Allerdale Borough Council – you must take your assessment in Workington

Peterborough City Council – you must take your assessment in Peterborough

If you wish to cancel or change your assessment you must give Green Penny at least 4 clear working days notice, or you will lose your fee (your notice period cannot include weekends or bank holidays, the day of your assessment or the day you give us notice). If you do not attend the assessment, you will not be entitled to a refund. Notice must be given to Green Penny directly and not through any individual assessor.

Example of cancellation notice: if your assessment is booked for a Friday, then the latest you can cancel or change your assessment would be the previous Friday (unless there are any Bank holidays during that week).

Replacement certificates can be replaced at a charge of £10 to cover administration, postage and packaging. Please note that information on replacement certificates cannot be altered.

• You can use a manual or automatic vehicle, regardless of which vehicle you intend to use once you have successfully become a taxi driver (unless the council you apply with stipulates any other terms).
• The vehicle being used can be of any age or make, however it must be a “car” with rear seats. You cannot use a van, or a car derived van (you can however use a van if it is designed solely for carrying passengers e.g. 8-seater vehicle or converted to carry wheelchair passengers).
• The vehicle must be taxed, insured, have a valid MOT and be roadworthy. Green Penny reserves the right to check if the vehicle being used for assessment has a valid MOT certificate and tax. Only vehicles which examiners have reasonable concern with will be checked, and it will not change how long the driving assessment lasts. If a vehicle is found to not have either a valid MOT certificate or tax, the assessment will not go ahead, and you will not be entitled to a refund.

There is no time limit (minimum or maximum) for booking another assessment, unless the council you apply with stipulates any other terms.

Unfortunately, we cannot take bookings over the phone.

Unfortunately, we cannot provide training for taxi assessment candidates, because this would create a conflict of interest. We do however suggest that you contact a driver trainer/driving instructor local to where you are taking your assessment, prior to attending a taxi assessment.

We cannot tell you the pass rates for individual assessment locations, however candidates always have a higher success rate at passing when pre-assessment training is taken.
